About EnergyTag: Accelerating Clean Power Every Hour, Everywhere

EnergyTag is an independent non-profit on a mission to accelerate clean power every hour, everywhere. We drive this shift by advocating for energy markets and policies designed to deliver round-the-clock clean power.


True grid decarbonization requires clean electricity to be available exactly when and where people use it.

However, traditional clean energy accounting relies on outdated annual averages. These legacy rules allow companies to claim a "100% renewable" status while their facilities continue to run on fossil fuels. This framework hides structural grid deficits. It leaves countries highly vulnerable to global price shocks, extreme market volatility, and foreign supply cuts.


We advocate for global reforms to energy markets and carbon accounting so they reflect real-time reality.

Our work builds the incentive structures needed to reward round-the-clock renewables, storage, flexible demand, and clean-firm power. This approach lowers overall grid costs and strengthens domestic energy security. By modernizing these frameworks, we pave the way for electricity systems that are genuinely clean, affordable, and secure.

The platform organizes public data on policies, corporate procurement, and market suppliers to show how hourly tracking and round-the-clock renewables are advancing across the globe. Our dashboard provides an open evidence base through distinct trackers, where you can:

What is the LevelTen Registry Acceleration Fund (RAF)?+

The Registry Acceleration Fund is a LevelTen Energy initiative supporting electricity registries that upgrade their infrastructure to issue hour-stamped, granular certificates aligned with the EnergyTag standard. It accelerates the global rollout of hourly tracking by funding the registry-side technical work needed to make 24/7 CFE claims verifiable.

Why it Matters

Why does hourly clean energy matching matter more than annual accounting?+

Annual accounting balances total clean energy generation against total annual demand on paper. This practice hides real-world grid deficits. For example, a company with 100% annual solar matching still relies on fossil fuels at night. Hourly tracking exposes these gaps. It encourages buyers to buy wind, solar, and battery storage to ensure clean energy flows every hour.

How does this tool relate to changes to Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) and Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)?+

Standards are changing. Both the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP) and the Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi) are reviewing updates for Scope 2 emissions accounting. They are considering granular tracking methods to stop corporate greenwashing and drive true grid decarbonization. While the SBTi's recently announced updates do not include hourly matching in targets, there is a requirement for hourly matching reporting for large users. The GHG Protocol has proposed hourly matching as a requirement for large users also in its draft standard due to be finalized in 2027.

Granular Certificates (GCs) are next-generation Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs). They prove exactly when and where an energy asset generated electricity. Unlike traditional certificates that use annual averages, GCs tag energy data down to the specific hour.

How do hourly matching tariffs differ from standard green energy contracts?+

Standard green energy contracts rely on net annual accounting. A supplier matches your total annual electricity use with clean energy generated at any point in the year.

Can battery storage (BESS) help companies achieve round-the-clock clean power?+

Yes. Battery energy storage systems (BESS) are critical for shifting clean energy to peak demand hours. Solar assets produce excess energy during the day, but nothing at night. Batteries store this day-time surplus and discharge it when the sun goes down.

What is the difference between additionality and deliverability in clean energy PPAs?+

Additionality helps ensure your clean energy contract funds new clean energy assets instead of buying from old ones.

Deliverability helps ensure clean energy can reasonably physically flow to your facility through local grid boundaries without causing congestion. Deliverability boundaries tend to follow the boundaries seen in power markets, which rely on similar concepts.

Additionality+

A procurement rule requiring corporate energy contracts to fund new clean energy projects. It ensures your investment adds new clean capacity to the local grid rather than buying from existing assets.

Round-the-Clock Clean Power+

Electricity procurement that matches consumer demand with clean energy generation hour-by-hour on the same grid network. It replaces legacy annual averaging models. This strategy is not an all-or-nothing milestone. It encompasses high percentage tracking targets — such as achieving a 90% firm renewable match — as companies actively scale up their hourly clean energy coverage.

Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS)+

A Battery Energy Storage System (BESS) captures and stores electrical energy in batteries, typically using lithium-ion technology. It charges during periods of low demand or high renewable generation (such as peak sun or wind) and discharges when grid demand is high, stabilizing electricity networks and smoothing out when clean generation drops. Co-Located Portfolio+

A group of clean energy assets that share the same physical site and grid connection point. In a power purchase agreement (PPA), a co-located portfolio typically combines complementary generation and storage technologies, such as solar PV, onshore wind, and battery storage.

Deliverability+

A tracking metric proving that clean electricity can reasonably physically flow to the buyer. It requires the clean energy asset and the consumer to operate within the same power grid boundaries. This rule prevents companies from claiming remote power that cannot reach their facilities.

Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs)+

A tradeable digital instrument used to track renewable energy generation and consumption. Traditional EACs match energy on a net annual basis, which masks real-world grid reality.

Granular Certificates (GCs)+

Next-generation Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) that track clean electricity down to the specific hour of generation. GCs augment annual certificates with precise hourly timestamps and location tags. Our platform tracks global registry upgrades that issue these certificates.

Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHGP)+

The Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol is the world's most widely used international carbon accounting tool. Developed by the World Resources Institute (WRI) and the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD), it provides standardized frameworks for businesses and governments to measure, manage, and report their climate-warming emissions.

Guarantee of Origin (GO)+

A Guarantee of Origin (GO or GoO) is an electronic certificate that proves to a consumer that exactly 1 MWh of electricity was produced from renewable energy sources. The official tracking certificate for renewable energy inside the European Union. You can filter active GO legislative updates in our Policy section.

Hybrid PPA+

A power purchase agreement (PPA) that bundles multiple energy technologies under a single contract. Buyers often combine solar and wind with battery storage to secure continuous hourly coverage.

Location-Based Method+

A carbon accounting method that measures emissions based on the average grid intensity where you consume electricity (i.e. usually within the same national boundary). It uses physical grid data from a specific geographic region. This method reflects the actual carbon intensity of the local power grid, but it does not account for specific corporate energy contracts.

Market-Based Method+

A carbon accounting method that calculates emissions based on the clean energy contracts your company signs. It uses contractual instruments like Energy Attribute Certificates (EACs) to prove ownership of renewable power. This method allows companies to claim a lower carbon footprint by purchasing certificates, even if the local grid still burns fossil fuels.

Power Purchase Agreement (PPA)+

A long-term contract where a corporate buyer purchases clean electricity directly from an energy supplier.

Renewable Energy Certificate (REC)+

A tradeable, market-based instrument that proves one megawatt-hour (MWh) of electricity was generated from a renewable energy source and delivered to the grid.

Science Based Targets initiative (SBTi)+

A global corporate climate partnership that validates business emission reduction targets. The SBTi defines criteria for corporate decarbonization in line with climate science.

Scope 2 Emissions+

Indirect greenhouse gas emissions resulting from purchased electricity, steam, heating, or cooling. Companies calculate these emissions using market-based or location-based methods.
